  • Think I should paint the inside of this cavity before I weld in the vin panel. I have epoxy coated but need to learn about finishes. What paint gets sprayed in this area and is it later coated with gravel guard. Any guidance on what is required and colours would be appreciated. ? ?

Pictures didn't load Scott. Give it another try so I can see what you're asking about.

Hi Scott, Sorry for the late response. Get is all behind a good coat of sealer then follow the area up with nice coat of semi-gloss black. Now is definitely the time to paint this cavity it while you've got a clearer shot at it before adding in the trunk floor. Justin

      • Now turning my attention to installing doors. Looks like some work to do here as well.

Placed a flat bar with a cut out to slip around the b-pillar support. This provided a good visual marker to line up the top of the door with the rear side window ledge. A couple of small clamps hold it in place.

        • So the issues for the drivers door.

          1. front bottom edge of the door binds on the bottom of the rocker drip try. May need to try to lower the try or create a subtle depression.

          2. The front outer door skin extends out slightly from the rocker panel. Not sure about next steps here. Try to draw in a bit when I put on the lower door skin by shaping the lower door panel bottom a bit or slice the rocker threshold to push out a bit.

          3. The lower rear door skin does not extend out enough to be flush the rocker panel. Same issue here try to adjust the door panel insert to push out the door skin a bit or cut a pie on rocker threshold to draw it in.

ID:	106947 The passenger door is lined up but a significant problem with the new b-pillar panel. The lower third of the inner door is bumping up against the rubber seal form. And the width between the door and the rocker threshold is not straight o by the time the inner door reaches the b-pillar the is not gap.

Always a tricky prospect to get the door skins to carry on with the body lines uniformly...looks like you're on the right track. Great progress here Scott!

ID:	107012 So time to try putting on the door skin. Marked the rough edge of the seam cut. I plan on crimping the old door skin edge to give it a little joggle for new metal to sit one and give me just a little bit of room to move around to get the right base edge.

the slight crimping along the edge to form a ledge for the new skin should provide a good base for welding.

                • Tried a scape piece to test buck for shaping the edge. The front corner is odd. It starts with just an 90 degree bend following along the vertical leading edge of the door the transitions to a full fold over along the base of the door. Click image for larger version

also drilled led out the welds on the front rocker so I can pull it out a quarter inch to line up with the door which is a little proud when aligned with rocker.

                    • Your missing a flange section on that rear vertical wall where that seal channel is. Here are some shots I took when I dealt with this area:
                      First two are factory.

The need to lap each other for the joint. Again yours is missing the flange next to that seal channel section.

                      • Thanks Justin for the images. I had previously made the flange along the seal ledge so roughly positioned. I recal that I had wanted to wait to put it in later but before I had welded in the inner trunk panels - unfortunately they are welded in now.
I thought I had seen a previous picture with this lapping on top but if I understand your image correctly the flange sits under inner panel? Is this correct that flange sits under? Click image for larger version
