Just thinking that the earlier car was likely a 1500cc engine and the '57 was probably a 1600 (roller bearing also), so perhaps class entries based on displacement was a deciding factor on which car to enter in a particular event to have the best chance of a good placement.

Nope - both were 547/1 1500cc roller bearing crankshaft engines. The '56 Carrera was a 1500GS. The '57 was a 1500GT (GT chassis and GT motor).

The '58 Carrera model year brought with it the 692/1 1600cc plain bearing crankshaft engine with oil coolers up front. However, racers preferred the roller bearing engines for higher RPM benefits.

Not sure where you're getting at? The car that has been very well described is a '57 Carrera GT - with a 547/1 roller bearing crankshaft engine --- it does not have oil lines.

No problem. A lot of 4-cam engine Spyder & 356 GS/GT model changes were going on during the early to late 1950's.

It must have been a very exciting time for the drivers and spectators alike --- by example to see so many Carrera's being raced at one time - the thousands that showed at Nurburgring, Avus, and the many International Rallys.

What we tend to forget, or never experienced, is the urgent and powerful sound of a properly tuned Fuhrmann engine, and the aroma of Castrol bean oil that was invariably used in these cars. These were marvelous and tough genuine automotive thoroughbreds,and they aquitted themselves well against the world's best.

356 (Vance) ...and thanks very much to you too. Your earlier 2 photos clearly showed the license number WZ - V125 which led to confirming the Carrera to be owned by H.J. Walter. Many other contributors to thank as well.

Going full circle (if I may) back to the August '58 Nurburgring GP photo with Walter's Carrera wearing no.51 - I noticed the same unusual Sticker(?) at the top center of the windshield. It now appears to be on the inside? Part of the point-question is the windshield "thing" confirms it is the same car - no.75 entered in the June '58 Austrian Alpenfahrt - but what is it?

Also, noticed before in one of the no. 75 photos, was the "thing" was gone! Maybe removable? Thanks for the interest in this and any ideas you may have. Photos below to compare.

Back to the Windshield Sticker(?) piece. I might have an answer. H-J's race history with the Werkes Carrera appears to have started at the 1957 Tour de Belgique. A factory gearbox build sheet with chassis number notes on it "fur Walter" dated 4 November 1957. This tracks with the November date below.

Question is - does the photo of this event plate (repo) match that of the piece in the windshield? It could be that H-J kept it on the car during the subsequent races. The piece also looks to have square adhesive blocks or suction cups right and left that hold it on. Comments, opinions, and ideas welcome.
