          • Art, thanks for joining us and Welcome!

WOW! Looks like a 4-cam motor from an Elva. More of these exotic engines in Bugs than I thought.
            Thanks again Guys!

                    • Think I have seen those engines before. They were available for sales 3-4 years ago

                          • Trying to confirm the Carrera coupe in this photo. Car no. 51-reported by German magazine das Auto Motor und Sport to be H.J. Walter at the German Grand Prix in August 1958. Other records show no. 51 as driven by Josef (Sepp) Greger/Paul Denk. The Walter/Strahle Carrera was no.50 at this time. This race may have also been run as a pre-Grand Prix race.

                            Also - some other questions:

                            1. Is this Carrera a 1957 model - are those square end shaped door
                            handles?

                            2. Can the License plate letters-numbers be made out clearly?

                            Thank you.

                            Michael Doyle

It is difficult to see the handles clearly in that grainy photo, but I'd bet with the 'bee hive' tail lights, they are square. Newest would be mid-year '57.

Quarter windows? Paint color difference from door to rear?

The shape of the front and rear body valences look GT as also the hint of louvers show on the engine lid. Also difficult to see the wheel and offset...plus, all that could have been changed, so maybe someone can forensically get the plate number.

                              Good luck Michael,
                              -Bruce

                                Thanks Bruce for your comments.

This Carrera shows the markings (or lack of) as a GT model. As you point out the Quarter windows - they are Plexi and without chrome frames. In 1957 only the factory Werks Carreras received them like this.

Also, no Carrera script on the front fender - and no lower panel deco strip under the door - make it appear as a GT model.

On the taillights - not sure if they are beehive or teardrop? ...it appears there may be a shine-up license light that would correspond to having teardrops. This first T2 change was in April/May of '57, but the model kept the square door handle into August '57.

And forensic is a good term to use for the plate number. Kinda looks like either:

                                ? V - 425
                                ? V - 125

Other eyeballs and ideas welcome. Thanks

                                Michael Doyle
