  • .....ahhh, to have a machinist's skill, a Bridgeport mill and a Pullmax......sigh.....next you'll post that Peter will roll the outer skin in one piece....now that would really be "showing off."

    Fortunately, guys like me have gone from having some "good used" front lids available to Porsche Classic, Trevor Marshall or Restoration Design having fairly decent reproductions.

    Still, I am always impressed with abilities as shown here and generally on ABCGT.com. Great work!

      • Wow Niel,
        Looks like you made some loong lived dies for the frame manufacturing.
        Usally you can get away with plastic or hardwood dies if its just a short project.
        How many runs did you do until it was ready?

        Pullmax is a good machine to do some metal magic in.
        I only have the smaller version Junior Pullmax.

        I think that your 356 is getting much better TLC now than when it was at the Werk

            it's always a little daunting hammering on a freshly made panel that looks great but it has to be done!

            • last piece made up, just need to tweak it in to final position, hammer the hood lock recess in and weld it up

                By the way, I have a good used one of those I'd have sold you cheap....

                Seriously, I know how much fun that work can be, especially if it's for yourself...very rewarding...and especially if you have access to people and tools that are 'special' in ability.

                    it's all welded up now and the hinge brackets are made ready for it to be lined up and spot welded on

                      • hey Mark, thank you,

                        my arms are pretty normal really,it was done freehand no wooden buck, all done with simple tools,sandbag wooden bossing mallet, hammer and dolly. I took it up to peters to run it through the dies on the pullmax to clean it up, but it still has hammer marks in it now.

                        I shall post a couple of pics as it its now

                          hope that's worked I'm on my mobile lol, the outer had a quick sand and the majority of the hammer marks have gone.

                          I have to add, the small ball pien hammer has had the flat face rounded slightly, and the ball end has had the point removed

                              • well it's been a while since i last updated this thread, lots of things going on as usual... i've got one door on with the outer skin attached, the other door is almost ready for the skin to be attached, and then mounted back on. i've had to make another windscreen scuttle as i wasn't all that happy with the first, and i've made the l/h front guard/fender/wing in two pieces instead of three like i did the r/h. that was more complicated holding it together to do a 4ft weld lol
