  • First, strictly (and logically) speaking, I would think it hard to distinguish between the reliabilities of VW and Porsche engines. Peas in a pod from the same fertile garden when it comes right down to it. If picking nits, one could say that a VW mag case would tip the scales a bit in Porsche's favor.

Of course, keeping to a "cost effective" basis, it's no contest, to be sure.

    Gearboxes:

Isn't it the case that the pronounced "hump" in the nose end requires cutting the tub for clearance (presuming one wishes to maintain a level axis of the power/drive train).

Lastly, does no one build a VW transaxle that incorporates a viscous limited-slip diff? To my way of thinking (whatever that's worth), the lack of a proper LSD (and no, the jelly-bean jar does not count) has always been the single greatest weakness/oversight of the VW/Porsche genre.

Even penny-pinching GM understood the value of driving both wheels on an axle with the Corvair. Of course, these days of cheapo front-drivers and brake-based "traction control", no one knows what a limited-slip is for.

I will now clasp my hands to forestall the impending rant on the current tragic state of cars a normal person can actually buy these days...

    • 2332 is going together nicely. The CR has been lowered, new Paradise cam to replace the FK89, and a pair of CB 044 CNC Super Pro (44 x 37.5) heads to replace the Superflow units.

The rest has pretty much stayed the same with the exception of being cleaned and painted black. Intakes are being match ported then coated, IDA's are being coated and detailed as well. Once that's done it'll go on the dyno for numbers.

      • Hey Greg,

That is looking spectacular! So a lower CR for easier street driving running on Regular? I think you made the right decision abandoning the 912 engine build and not getting caught up in that VW drivetrain in a Porsche sacrilege BS. With all the trick aftermarket parts there is available there is simply no choice for all out performance. VW is the king hands down; then there is the price difference. A certain 356 restorer gets 40K+ to bring a 356/912 engine up to just over 2 liters. Yet after all that investment it still won't break 200HP. I believe your last try cleared that mark and at a fraction of the cost. The choice is clear, at least to me. I look forward to hearing it run and I'm still impressed by acceleration and the exhaust note this thing was making in that old video.
        Keep up the great work!

        • Thanks.
Yep, I did the lower CR for ease of driving and the ability to run pump gas.
This same engine was doing 220hp (at the wheels) previously. I'm *guessing* 125hp - 150hp now, but I could be wrong. Time will tell.
Hopefully, I can get the shifting sorted once I'm driving it a bit more.

            • I'm running drums in the rear (drilled 5x130) along with this "new" engine I am also converting the front disks to Wilwood 4 piston and ditching the current VW single piston calipers. I'll post photos of that when I actullay get around to making a caliper mount.

              • Ok, I have rear disc with e brake, but have problems with shock absorbers, be careful when installing because you must relocate the base of schock abosrbers.

I'm running pre 55 VW axle tubes (with straight shock mount) and a short shock and have had no issues.

                    • Looks awesome, can't wait to hear what kind of numbers she's producing. Nice little testing frame you've got it mounted in BTW.

                      • That's the "dyno car" at Paradise Motorsports. Jason and Kris are doing the tuning and dyno work, not me.

                        • 176hp / 167 torque at the wheels. RELIABLY!

Now I need to get it assembled and back in the car.

                          • Healthy numbers for sure and the reliability will be welcomed no doubt. So how long before you add a turbo charger?
Looking forward to hearing her run!

                            • He says it's a "mellow 176hp"

No turbo on this car. I will do a turbo on something else though.

My buddy ran his EFI turbo car the same time they were doing my engine.

325hp/311tq on race fuel / race map
215hp/207tq on pump gas/ street map

I have absolutely no use for that much power....yet!

                              • WOW! I think that motor would be way too much for your old girl. That kind of HP and torque would require a proper tubular sub-frame/roll cage assembly between the torsion tubes if you where ever really going to be able to use it. A burnout session with an engine like that would surely spring your doors open right after its brute force twisted that old unibody.
The blacked out carbs look great! Have they been anodized?
