Justin~ The fan shroud is an aftermarket unit, I like the look of them over the stock shroud. As with anything aftermarket though I had to trim/modify the tins and shroud for them to fit properly. May order a shroud without the heater ducts since I usually don't drive them when it gets too cold out. The carbs are 40's but EMPI's version of the Delortos and will be getting the electronic ignition kit so I don't have to mess with points.

I finished up my friends car this weekend and he should be picking it up in the next few days. This bug was RUSTY! The lower six inches of the car were gone... glad to see it go, now I can start on my car
These were the floor pans and the heater channels didn't look any better.

Cleaned up my garage a little this weekend. My friend should be picking up his car tomorrow (fingers crossed) Then I will have room for shortening the VW pan.
I chose to stay home and straighten up the garage while my friends went to BNNTA VW show. Here is a shot of their rides...

I did get some work done on the pan today. Removed what was left of the old pans and started cutting out the bulk head cross member.
I like this shot... Here is a stock VW next to my chopped and sectioned Volksrod.

I have my garage back! My friend picked up his bug today. I think by the time he reached the corner of my street I had the pan moved over in it's spot. I set one of the Ghia pan half on there to see how it fits and as usual I will have to do a lot of trimming.

Wondering if anyone has a better picture resolution in their files of this diagram? The numbers are a little blurry and want to make sure I have the correct measurements when I start on the body.
This what I have...
While I'm at it, would someone have an "A" body diagram also?
I have this one...

I see that your buddy picked up his shell and that you're now hitting the ground running! Looking forward to watching this one go together! No problem I can take some clear detailed shots out of my '56 workshop manual for you... Thanks for the update! BTW: that Side by side comparison shot with your volksrod is really cool!!

It has been awhile since I worked on my project due to work cutting hours and me trying to re-budget everything ...but finally got a little done this weekend.

Both sides are done, just have to weld the cross member on now.
Rear corner before...
After...
When these are finished I can start fitting the floor pans and then shorten the wheelbase.

As promised Frank. Sorry this took so long. This is everything concerning frame and body details from my '56 factory workshop manual. These dimension will be exactly the same for ALL 356A. Hope these help. Justin
Section C-C is your door hinge boss width.

Thanks for the clear shots of the manual Justin! It will make things a lot easier with all the correct dimensions to go by.

Welded on the front crossmember, trimmed and fitted the floor pans. This weekend I should have them fully welded on. Then the next step will be shortening the pan for the correct wheelbase.

Shortened the VW pan to the Porsche wheelbase. Wasn't bad at all to do, triple checked the measurements and made sure everything was level and welded it all back together.

Started welding the pans on but ran out of mig wire before I finished. Getting close...

Looking good Frank!
Wow, That is considerably shorter. How much exactly did you have to shorten it to achieve the 356 wheel base? Are you considering raising both the front and rear torsion housings to lower the center of gravity much like a 356 chassis? Not to mention lowering the stance at the same time. Great job so far, get some more wire and keep going!
