88 is synonymous with Jack McAfee, but this time 550A-0104 was driven by Pete Lovely with Jack driving 550-0047 #89 in the background at Palm Springs in Nov 56. The cars were owned by John Edgar who also liked his stable of racing Ferraris...

I think that is the only photo ever of a 550A with a soft roof - they never had any fittings for one, only a few studs for a half canvas tonneau. This is 550A-0101 at the 1957 1000km Beunos Aires race.

The back of the photo says: So we had the Spyder camouflaged to meet the requirements of the current formula (which might mean it had to have a roof!)

The interesting thing is the windscreen did not pass scrutineering and they had to replace it before it raced...

550-015 driven by Wolfgang Seidel/Helm Glockler at the 1955 Mille Miglia

despite a serious incident this car finish the race 8th overall and first in the sport class 1.5 L

Hence the choice of Andrew for this poster

Interesting story
In 2014 several 550 entered the historical mille miglia amongst them 550 015 was again there driven by Andreas and Nathalie Pohl (race number 366)

The famous driver Jacky Icks was invited by Karl Friedrich Schaufele, Choppard watches vice president, sponsor of the race revival to share with him the wheel of 550A-0113 5(race number 396)
