Annie Bousquet in blue driver suit and Gilberte Thirion before the start of the race
Indeed they raced at Reims the same day but not in the same race
Annie Bousquet was killed during the less 1500 cc sportcars race and Gilberte Thirion raced in the over 1500 cc serie

      • I have no indication of the date and place but guess it should be 1953 (the 550 is a very early one) and somewhere in the Alps (Austria ? Italy ?)
The 2 cars on the extreme left are Denzel

and at least one 550 and soething looking like another 550 but could be the Glokler number 1 which inspired the 550

        • That is a great photo - never seen before! It must be at least 1955 as the 550 with white spears is a customer spyder. The other one is a real mystery - it is a 550, but it looks like it has a Buckelwagen (high rear) attached. Only thing is the fins aren't like the early models of 550-06, 07 and 09 but more rounded like the customer car and has the duel twin exhausts which was only on 550-06

          • There are not many listed races with 2 x Denzels racing - Baden in 1955 seems the closest, but it is a road race and the 550 does not have plates on it

            • Very interesting photo, indeed. The car on the right side of the frame, next to the 550 with white spears, does not appear to have a fuel filler on the front bonnet. It also has a dark stripe across the bonnet, which may indicate a rookie drive in some locals, at least to my understanding.

                • The stripe on the hood of the car indicates the engine size:

For the benefit of the non-German speaking readers, the 1951 document issued by O.N.S (Oberste Nationale Sportkommission, the Top National Sportscommission for automotive sports in Germany), explains:

"For a better overview at all race events, we announce the use of the following color banding on the bonnet:

Sports cars to 2000 ccm = Signal red
Sports cars to 1500 ccm = Royal blue
Sports cars to 1100 ccm = Black
Sports cars to 750 ccm = Schweinfurth Green
Sports cars to 500 ccm = Yellow with 1 cm black border

The overall width of the bands is 12 cm.

                    • Thanks Andrew for sharing your huge knowledge
I found these pics by chance on the net looking for something else
Like you I had never seen thess pics before
Sorry I have nothing of better quality
I come back to the color strip indicating the engine size
Up to to day I ever thought these strips had only been put in force for the sport cars racing in East Germany not in the West
In another hand found the pic below representing the Glockler 1 and 2
One has the stri the other one not

Very interesting pics I never seen before
Have you an idea where they have been taken ?
Just after the end of the second World War the Wolfsburg VW plant fall into the Great Britain zone
The English helped the first to rebuilt the factory then to restart the production on a low level
The 1000 th VW beetle was produced in March 1946

                              • At that same time over 50.000 Kubelwagen and 15.000 schimwagen were released from the German army
These were used as base car by many young German mecanics to built their own "special" or "eigenbau" in German as you may see on the below pic showing a race start in the early 50's
