  • The number of cars built over the 5 years of their productiopn (1950-1954) is not known with certitude but should be in the range of 100
On these 100 around 20 still exist
In 2011 visiting Bob Van Elst BBT in Belgium I saw he had an unrestored D&S in his shop (the red car alongside the Denzel)

    • When Gottfried Dannenhauer and his son Kurt started their business in 1950 VW accepted to deliver them bare chassis
In 1953 VW presented at the Frankfurt carshow their own "sport car" the VW Karmann Ghia

VW inform Dannenhauer they will no longer accept to deliver them bare chassis.
To continue to produce cars Dannenhauer had no other alternative than ask the potential customers to come with an used beetle from which they will get the base chassis
Of course the selling price already high became uncompetitive
When the VW Karman enter in large voloume production by end 1954 this was the end of the Dannenhauer and Stauss VW based cars

        • But luckily the end of the Dannenhauer cars was not the death of the company
Gottfried and his son were clever enough to diversify there company
In the 1951 serie of pics taken in the plant I have found these ones

          • When I first saw the pic with many beetles I first thought these cars were there for their chassis
But after reflexion and seing the others I realise that :
These pics were taken in 1951 in the first years of the company at a time where VW was still delivering bare chassis and therefore these VW were there simply for maintenance or body repair
On the last pic you see a guy polishing bondo on a beetle wing which confirm that the Dannenhauer and Stauss company in addition to building exception cars, was also a large coachwork company idea confirm by the others pics showing cars of other make including a 356 Pre A
