You are right Vance this photo was taken Sunday June 23 rd 1951 very soon after the start of the Le Mans 24 hours race (the clock on the Dunlop bridge in the first curve after the start line indicate 4 PM)
Great week end indeed as 24 hours later the Porsche Gmund 356 SL number 48 driven by the french team Auguste Veuillet/Edmond Mouche will finish the race 19 th overall and first in the 1.1 L class, first participation and first victory of a Porsche in the Le Mans race
Car race number 34 is a Frazer Nash driven by Dickie Stoop/Peter Wilson that will finish 18th
Car number 31 is a Ferrari 212 who will finish 16th
Car number 37 is a Gordini who was DNF
Out of the 60 starting cars only 28 did cross the finish line
Another pic of the start taken at the same time
Veuillet Mouche 356 SL Gmund 063
Veuillet Mouche plate number 21-0729 has helped me to endify with certitude the year as on Vance pic the Porsche race number painted on the left side of the car may be read 48 but no Porsche wear this number in 1951
Two more pics of the Veuillet car

Gmund is a small city of around 3000 inhabitants in Carinthia (Austrian Alps not too far from Salzbourg
As you may see surroundings are much prettier to day
Gmund is also the village were Porsche started to bui_lt cars in 1949
It is also where is the Helmuth Pfeifhoffer Porsche museum
and of course Gmund is close to Zell am See the small village where was and still is the Porsche family villa
