Interesting history of 550A-0140...

This was the only Spyders which raced in South Africa. Peter Engelbrecht raced it in the 9 h Kyalami on 3 Nov 1963 - yes it was a DNF because he crashed into the embankment hard and never raced it again (not sure if he died - some sites say he did) - it was bought in 1966 by 21 year old Paul Richards as a wreck, fixed it himself and entered his 1st race at Kyalami on 28 May 1966 (incorrect listing on P732) where he crashed and killed himself.

Steve Heinrichs has asked me to make the correction that Andrew identified on page 732 for Paul Richards with 550A-0140. Andrew's information accompanied by the photo is more contemporaneous than our two sources, one claiming a 1963 race and the other claiming the 1966 race. We have moved this result to the 28 May 1966 Kyalami race. We now have several sources listing the 1966 race as the correct date including the information from this website:

Steve Heinrichs has asked me to follow-up with Andrew about the 1960 Volta a Portugal. We were able to find one independent reference to this race. The posters at this website say the race was on 3 March 1960:

Based on the postcards I have of the race, the translation is '3 to 6 MARCH 1960' (which was Friday to Sunday) - It was probably a 3 day event

On P639 Monsanto GP, you have both #3 Rui Marinho de Lemos and #1 Jorge Moura Pinheiro driving 550-0080 at the same time with different race numbers. I believe it is the same race and Jorge Moura Pinheiro was driving the 550...

P687 is missing Daytona 3 September 1961 #44 Bill Bencker in a 550A spyder.

Steve Heinrichs has asked me to revise our database for the Bill Bencker race listed on page 687. We have listed Bencker with 550-0030 in red font. With Andrew's new information, we will list 3 September 1961 race for Bencker as Chassis Type 550A and we will delete Chassis Nr. 550-0030. We are curious about the steep pitch to the headlights that we note in the photo.

P602 12 h Sebring #41 is a 550A spyder not 718-02

Hello Everyone,

Steve Heinrichs has asked me to correct our database to show that at 1958 Sebring, Andrew is correct that the Schell/von Trips car, start nr. 41 is actually a 550A, not 718-02 as listed in the book.

We found a video of this race at the Etceterini website https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c59NDVvcp7E

At 4.38 minutes, we see start nr. 41 as it appears in the photos. We do not see a clear screen shot of the 718 in this video. However, start nr. 45 in the video (Miles/Kunstle)is a silver car. By contrast, in 1957 start nr. 45 (Miles/Kunstle again)is a red car.

We think the 550A at 1958 Sebring is probably 550A-0131, the Werks car that appeared in several races with von Trips and other Werks pilots during that period.

We will add this change to the database and the Errata sheets. In addition, we'll correct the photos to 1958 Sebring.

Steve Heinrichs has asked me to revise the database for 1959 GP Monsanto listed on page 639 of the book. We listed 550-0080 with start nr. 1 (Moura Pinheiro) and with start nr. 3 (Marinho de Lemos). Our primary source listed Moura Pinheiro with 550-0039. We believe that was an error. In this photo and our own collections, Moura Pinheiro is shown with the car that we believe is 550-0080. We have never found a photo of Marinho de Lemos in this race.

If Marinho de Lemos was driving a 550, we believe it must have been 550-0039.

We will change Marinho de Lemos chassis nr. 550-0039 and list in red font in the database and add to the Errata sheets.
