Gerard, you are correct. It is 1954 Mille Miglia and an incorrect start time was given to 550-08. The start time was changed to 3:51am, so the race number was changed. In the photo is von Hanstein, Paul Frere in the background, mechanic Eberhard Storz, Herrmann wearing a cravat and Rolf Wutherich pointing to the number.

Happily in those days race number were hand painted
The brush was still in the paint tin so easy to change the number
Have you an idea was Paul Frere was there ?
