  • So tried my hand at leading for the first time. Ordered supplies from Eastwood’s and watched a bunch off videos. Videos make it all look easy. Controlling heat is tough. And being as clean as possible is very important. First attempt at the door was a struggle it was a very long stretch of seam to fill. Likely to ambitious a job for first attempt and also ended up putting far to much lead on. I file start file work next and see how it turns out.

    • Scott, I remember my first experiences with lead in the mid 1970's. Oh what fun. I tried vertical surfaces first that was a mistake put more on the floor than the car! But... I persevered and it suddenly became much easier the more I did. Yes, you even get the amount of lead sorted out and after all you can at least remove it. I never had the respirator back then I wonder if I even wore a face mask!!

      I do know after over 13 years later when I sprayed my car again in the late 1980's the lead I put on my car had never shrank or caused problems. Its still there today a good decision to use.

      • Thanks Roy. It was an interesting old school approach. Learned a lot yesterday of what not to do and what to do. After filing and sanding much happier now. On to the next door with half as much lead this time!!! Click image for larger version

          • Thanks Roy. Took a short diversion to repair rusted padded dash metal frame. Router and block of wood provided the shape and some metal and a press turned out the replacement piece.

              I've tried that repair before and its a really tough shape feature to replicate. Nice job on that, I like the carved out hammer form idea.

              • okay think I am ready to put the nose on for the final time. Had my friend bronze in the drain pipe -tough to do. A shot of self etching primer on upper battery box which will be tough to reach with epoxy primer once the nose is on.

                • Before welding the nose on I made the cutout for the bumper brackets. Used a piece of wood bolted on to the bumper bracket to determine placement. The typical factory hole is bigger than needed to accommodate “one size fits all” so i was able to make mine smaller knowing the actual position and size of bumper brackets. . I also welded on a small ridge/ledge for a future “delete” plate to cover the hole with a metal plate (like the fog delete plate on early 912/911s). I am going for more of a outlaw approach and will not likely install the bumpers - but likely additional driving lights. Still not sure on the path but this way I have options.

                        • Thanks to you both. Nice to have this on and in place. With all the curves and shapes the nose likes to keep its shape from the heat. Main seams now done so on to welding the rain gutter to the inner panel.
