  • Rusty Tub 2 1958 Speedster Project

    Hi Guys
The time has come to start telling the story of my new project.
I have been lurking in the background and following all your amazing work and in particular studying Justin's Coupe 2 Speedster thread.

And like Justin my donor car was sourced from Ric at "Rusty Tubs" in the US, He is a great guy to deal with and fingers crossed my car should be hitting English soil at Felixstowe this Sunday.

It's a 1958 Coupe but hopefully with more metal than Justin's.

The plan is to strip it of all mechanicals then media blast it.

I will try and update you guys as often as I can, but not everyday like Justin (I have a wife, kids, dog, job and old house to look after).

Here are a few pictures of it when it was found...

    Drew,

I will be following your efforts with interest. Hope it arrives okay and you are pleased with it. Actually looking at the photos it looks far better than some I have seen. If the underneath has a similar look to the top I reckon you have done well.

A few more pics when you have the car and the time would be great. Bet you are excited

      Drew,
I agree with Roy. At least from what we can see of the photos, it looks better than most. Too nice a car to be donor for a speedster! And maybe aquamarine blue as well?

          Hey Drew,

Thank you for sharing this build with us and congratulations on your new project! Yes, Ric is a great guy to deal with. Your donor looks miles ahead of the one I received so you'll probably be into the actual conversion phase slightly ahead or about the same time as me. Looking forward to sharing and bouncing around ideas between all of us here to help this journey go a bit more smoothly; which is what its all about. Keeping my fingers crossed for your Sunday delivery. Thanks again and looking forward to your progress posts! Justin

            Drew,

Great to see another project! And welcome to the forum. Looking forward to seeing it progress. I've got a busy schedule so my build comes in fits and spurts. It's fun and relaxing from the daily real work grind.

              Welcome Drew!

Looking forward to your journey. Now we get to learn about bonnets, boots and scuttle bulkheads.

Thanks for the welcome guys and Roy yes I am very excited, although it lands on Sunday it may be a couple of weeks till she clears customs.

So in the mean time here are a few more pics that Ric took when the car was back at his place.

And yes Justin I'm hoping that I won't have to go quite as far as you with rust repairs and really looking forward to learning and sharing the journey.

The car looks pretty solid but who knows until the paint comes off.

Looks pretty good! I'm sure there will be a few small surprises of rust once you really get into it but nothing too serious I would imagine. Will you also be converting this car to RHD? Justin

                    Drew,

I think Justin is correct, the car is really quite good in area's that on some cars have no metal at all. The rear torsion bar area looks like the floors original and no breaks in the surface. Sure there might well be some thin areas and rust but at least you can measure and make templates if you need to, not just imagine what was there at one time.

If tbe battery box area is still in one piece then that also will be a good sign. Of course when you have the time to make your impression on the condition you have an audience already here waiting to hear your comments. Best place around for getting good information on bodywork and chassis remedial work

                      Hi Guys

Justin, this one will be left hand drive and as close as I can get to stock 58 speedster.
Roy here are a few more pics let me know what you think?

Looks like a well preserved chassis so far to me. Okay Drew, so a full conversion to a T2 Speedster; Will you be capping and rolling the tops of your coupe doors over or do you have Speedster doors for it? A high bow top frame is still a getable item I would imagine but a windshield frame is an entirely different matter. Do you have one already or are you thinking of a kit-car frame? BTW: I think I saw a correct reproduction from brass but I can't remember where I saw it. Hope your car made it into port yesterday. Justin

                          Good morning Justin.
I was lucky enough to get a pair of T2 speedster doors from Ric.
So this should give me a good start point for the conversion.

Also got a high bow frame made by Robert Broker in Holland, he does some very acurate copies.

The windscreen frame will be the original brass construction from Elevenparts in Switzerland.
