  • 356 chrome overider bars dimensions to fit.

    Guys,

Have a friend in the Netherlands who needs the following dimensions to fit his chrome over rider bars to his car. I cannot help because my UK car never had them fitted by the factory.

It would be great if someone knew the measurements I show on the photo attached.

    Hey Roy,

I can get those dimensions for you but what year is your buddy's car? If its a '59 it will have the high over rider bar and would have a corresponding higher hole position. Your sample photo shows the '59 higher position. 56-58 had a low bar and that hole is a few mm's lower making it a bit more centered to the horn grill opening.

      Hello

It's my car that Roy is talking about.
I'm new here so here's a little intro from myself.

I'm a real Porsche enthusiast from Belgium (Not Netherland, Roy ).
I've bought my 356A few years ago
It's a USA model (Coming from Orlando)
      Build: 15/09/1959

Hope to start the restoration this year
(Have been collecting all needed parts to start; sheet metal, rubbers, gaskets,...)

So the car has indeed the high over rider bars.

Hope you can help me on the dimensions

      Regards
      Bart

Thanks Justin, Bart has excellent English I have a poor memory
guess that's my age showing up

Its nice to have another 1959 356A owner contributing on board here even if it is a LHD car

Original nose section with 9 & 3 O'clock turn signal hole position confirming it to be from a T2 which was fitted with the light pedistals.

From the base of horn grill opening to the bottom edge of the hole at center is 30mm or 65mm to the top which ever way you want to look at it.

Hope these answered your question. If not let me know and I can take another sight marking. Best of luck with your new project!

            Hello Justin

THANKS A LOT for your measurements !!

            Great forum here

Meanwhile I also received some info from someone else who had a printout from a Porsche 356 manual (I don't know the source)?

              Justin,

Thanks so much for helping Bart, you know like me when the job you need to do stops, because you just cannot find anywhere the info you need its so frustrating. Its always a relief when suddenly its all clear.

Yes Bart, maybe cover the area in masking tape mark the dimensions and by placing things in position but not drilling make a full ' mock up' to check. The cut angled end has to be parallel to the panel it attaches to and in relation to the bumper so it surely must have to be correct to the 'eye ' as well.

If those bars were fitted and supplied by the factory I am sure they would have a template marking situation governed by the other holes for the horn grill. That would be the datums, and not I think using a ruler from the chrome horn grill after its fitted.

However, better to be safe than sorry and always make the check before holding the drill !!

                  Roy

                    Hi Roy

Yes, this approach seems to be the way to tackle it

I'm going to create a template (in the shape of the rubber that has to sit in this -to be cut- hole) and then check what dimension comes closest.

It's my pleasure Roy, I'm always grateful when someone supplies an answer to a question I have.

Bart, I'm glad you posted that factory shot with the dimensions. I'm sorry for the confusion I've caused:

That 25mm measurement was taken at the horizontal center of the tube hole to the edge of the grill opening. But thats not what you were asking for.

From center rib for the grill stud hole to vertical center of the tube hole is approximately 36mm. That puts us back on the same page. Again sorry for the confusion and I hope this clears things up.

                              Hi Bart,

sorry no pair lying around, but a single one!

this one came off a parts car-59 Cabriolet out of Canada.

i believe it to be original, but longer than what you have stated you need.

let me know if you are interested.

                              regards
