  • Guys,

My recollection is that Mathe did build a 550 from scratch although maybe slightly smaller. Somewhere I have a photo...but the binders that may have it are not with me. I need a week or so to see if I can find.

Please check carefully regarding 550-04. I believe that car had 547-05 4-cam motor for that race. I could be wrong.

      • Mr.Porschinelle:

In any case, it is clear that the two in the photos are sporting 4-carb engines. It might be interesting to see how the linkage worked in this case. Do you know what kind of output these engines enjoyed?

However, this still leaves me wondering about the number of intake ports on the heads used on the steel (presuming that the racing intentions of the alloy bodied units would justify a special solution) production versions of the first 356s. Or more directly, did any production 356 use the single-port VW heads?

And wasn't the Cisitalia GP car a beauty! I wonder who penned the bodywork on that piece. Given that my memory is suspect, I seem to recall that the car was either never raced or raced once or twice. I presume it was powered by a 4-cyl. 1500. I wonder how many carbs it had.

        • Morning All,
Sorry for my photo with Ottos "550" I was not taking over or trying to stray away from the topic.... I just posted a msg with some pointers and nice picture from the old days.

I was told to go elsewhere so I will not post any more Otto photos in this tread!
It will come in its own topic later.

            • In June 1953 550 01 (Helmut Glockler/Hans Hermann) race number 44) and 550 02 (Paul Frere/Richard Von Frankenberg race number 45)
Find a clear pic of the push rod engine
This time carburetors lok rather to be dual barrel with no air filter
Therefore not so sure now that the 550 04 engine seen above at the 1953 Carrera Panamericana was fitted with 4 carburetors
There was 4 air filters but may be they were fitted to prevent from the dust

We will double check but looks like you are correct. Start Nr. 160 is 550-04 and the photo shows a pushrod.
The 4-cam must have been installed later.

                Thanks for the "catch".

                • S.J.:
The "ordinary" Austrian aluminum cars had type 369 engines, some 1089cc, some 1134(?)cc. They all had Porsche cylinder heads, with 2 round inlet ports and vertical valves, and 2 angled exhaust valves, with individual rectangular ports. The basic layout remains the same, right up to the 912, some 20 years later. The 369 engine has many unique parts, but the basic upper-end layout is the same Porsche design carried through 20 years. To illustrate the rarity of 369 parts, I was told that the engine restoration of a very early Stuttgart car cost more than a 547 engine done a year before!
