                  Let me try this again. Some unknown number of coupes had a "mail slot" below the trunk lid (and above the bumper), as seen on the second car in Mr.Porschinelle's last post.

                  What is it and why is it there?

                        SJ here my contribution to your question
                        I discussed some months ago this slot problem with Jacques Mertens who now owe Gilberte Thirion 356/2 061 and has become an expert in Gmund cars
                        As Justin he thinks the slot was for an additionnal oil cooler
                        One thing is sure this slot was there when the car were assembled as on the 2 cars of the below pic

                          What could be confusing is that a same car could have or not this slot
                          Take Gilberte Thirion 356/2 061 car as an example
                          On this pic taken in March 1952 on a German motorway as Gilberte is coming back home in Belgium from Stuttgart where she had the car revised after her first races the slot is evident

                            In April 1952 during the Soleil de Cannes rallye that Gilberte raced with her father Max the slot seems to be still there behind the car plate 1211 and the rallye plate

                                Now always in 1953 but in September during the Tour de France auto with Ingeborg Polensky the front slot is no longer very perceptible
                                If she was of interest for cooling the oil why hide it behind the car plate
