                • Peter Max Muller sold his own cars and became official Porsche pilot
                  He took part to the Le Mans 24 hours in 1952 with Huschke Von Hanstein (DNF) and in 1953 with Auguste Veuillet (DNF again)
                  He also raced the Liege Rome Liege marathon in 1952 and 1953

                  • In 1972 at 60 years old, he attended the Monte Carlo rallye and was part of the Porsche team who won the team trophy

                      Gerard, great stuff as always! This motor has really peaked my interest is there anymore technical info about it? Was this just a one-off engine? 50HP out of just 1100CC huh; its those hemi-heads! I can't believe this design was not explored further. By Porsche for example... Thanks again! Justin

                      • Those heads are pretty cool, all right. You don't cobble those up in your garden shed.

                        Yet, I'm not surprised Herr Porsche passed them by... Legend or not, he kept his price-point and profit margin fixed in his mind, along with a determination to stick to his own patents.

                        After all, the 356 was a true silk purse out of his very own sow's ear, was it not?

                          In order to try to find answers to your question re : the Peter Max Muller/Vogelsang engine I made some search and find the right answer in a fantastic paper wrote by Phil Carney and publish under the title "356 Enginology" in the October/November 2009 issue 32 of the Registry magazine
                          I have sent copy of this 4 pages article to Justin by mail as I don't think we have the right to publish it on the site without Phil agreement
                          From this article it is said that the Peter Max Muller engine origin form 3 VW studies (115/170 and 171and not 161 as I said by error) on the VW KDF during the war in order to improve te output of the origninal design

                          • During the war the VW engineers worked on the following solutions
                            larger pistons
                            multiple carburetors
                            supercharging
                            overhead cams
                            hemisherical heads
                            and even sleeved valves

                            Very quickly it became evident that to increase output power, you needed larger valves more than multiple carburetors

                            After the war Ferry Porsche engineers made a summary of all what had been done by VW during the war and started three studies
                            Option 1 type 366 increase power with 2 barburetors instead of one
                            Option 2 type 367 : increase power by larger valves
                            Option 3 type 369 increase power by increased compression ratio, domped piston and redesigned rocker arms

                            • The legend say that Porsche project 367 was originated by the studies done by VW engineers for the "Sturmbootmotor" a KDF engine modified to be used into a marine landing craft
                              From the 3 projects, projects 369 was the cheapest (thanks SJ) and Porsche went on with this project for his Gmund 356
                              After the 2nd WW all the pieces used by VW engineers were sent to Gmund including several individual heads from the 367 project
                              Peter Max Muller through is relation with Ferry Porsche and Huscke Von Hanstein obtain some of these heads, heads that were used by the ex-VW engineer Gustav Vogelsang to develop the PeterMax Muller engine
