Seeing that some photos have recently surfaced of Hank Robb driving 550-0023 in the FM race on 31 July 1955 at the Midland Empire Sports Car Races, I think it would be right to assume the listings of McAfee, Levy and possibly other drivers are incorrect as McAfee is driving a different car at Torrey Pines in October 1955
Santa Barbara September 1955 - McAfee is not driving 550-0023...
Hello Everyone,
Steve Heinrichs has asked me to provide our latest information on the early 550 that Jack McAfee was driving. We thought he raced 550-0023 for John Edgar's team. Here are the changes we offer at this time:
We add a race on 31 July 1955, St. Joseph (Missouri), Midland Empire Sports Car Races, Rosecrans Memphis Airport. Three cars were at this race including Art Bunker (start nr. 61, 550-0020), Ed Crawford (start nr. 69, 550-0019) and Hank Robb (start nr. 96, 550-0023)
Next, we change Norman Scott races in chassis nr. 550-0063 to 550-0023. (We found a source that refers to large intake vents in a note).
Then, delete chassis nr. 550-0023 for Jack McAfee and Ruth Levy races. We have not found a replacement chassis nr.
Next change races for Gary Nelson to black font. This includes five races at February 1958 Pomona, March 1958 Phoenix and April 1958 Palm Springs
Finally, change the chassis nrs. for John Stevenson's races from 550-0048 to 550-0023. This change includes 8 races in 1958 at Laguna Seca, Vaca Valley, Minden, Santa Barbara. (In another note we found a reference to Nelson advertising his car for sale and selling it to John Stevenson on 2 May 1958, 02.05.195
In the meantime, we will continue to search for the 550-McAfee.
Steve Heinrichs has asked me to respond to Andrew's comment about start nr. 41 in the above photo.
We believe this photo of 550A is from 1957 Sebring, the car that McAfee/Herrmann raced (550A-0112) which also had start nr. 41.
All of our sources say that 718-002 was at 1958 Sebring with start nr. 41. The sources include factory race sheets, collected documents. Various websites identify start nr. 41 as a 718 RSK.
Below, please find a photo from our collections that show the 1957 Sebring car. The photo posted above seems to be this car. Note the small dent in the front fender, the taped headlights and the size, shape and placement of the start nr.
