Good friend has a few early cars. One is a very nice 55 speedster he bought a couple years ago. He has a minor fall in the shop and head butted the right rear quarter and cracked the paint. Yea cracked the paint and put a small dent in the panel. Barely visible, but 3” crack in the paint and very small oil can dent. Emergency repair
I took a knife to the cracks, chipped a 2x4” place where the entire paint system detached from the fender shin
He ask us to fix it, had some old Ruby Red paint that came with the car, so we said why not.
interesting repair, the car had 7 layers of paint, originally white and 6 resprays of ruby over the past 70 or so years. It was not as bad as the Irish 65 coupe we did a few years ago that lost over 20 pounds of bondo and 6 layers of paint.
But went well, pounded out the dent, feathered the bare spot, out a little spot filler and primed and painted. The most interesting part was where the dent was the paint had detached from the metal, when I flaked off the crack there was clean bright metal under all the paint. The factory primer had released over time, but the multiple layers held the paint system in place. Paint was pretty old and had lost some luster but close enough. Dent is under the reflected lights below
