  • 2013 Richmond Porsche Meet (RPM)

This past weekend (6/1-2/13) here in Richmond, VA we had the 17th consecutive gathering for the Richmond Porsche Meet (RPM). This is the Premier Event of the Shenandoah Region of the PCA that I am a member of. Unfortunately not many (2) 356s attended. I had expected 3 or 4 at least!
    BOOOO!
We had at last count 92 cars (Porsches) show on Saturday morning for the showing and 'Tops Only Concours' on the lawn of a couple who live in a very nice home on the banks of the James River that is located West of Richmond.

My favorite Porsche shop, Lufteknic, and the guys who restored my Roadster were in attendance with their tent that they also took to Hershey for the swap meet. The winds this Saturday were much more to their liking that almost blew their tent away at Hershey.

You will note that Chris Overholser of Lufteknic brought his nice 1957 356A Speedster to show. Chris is the one who did my Roadster 3 years ago.

After the concours we had a catered in lunch on the lawn and then those that signed up did a Rally Drive and each received a nice rally plaque similar to those Monte Carlo Plaques that you see in some of the old photos.
They wound up at the Porsche Dealer, Euroclassics, for a tech session on the new plug in hybrid technology for the 2014 Panamera and 2015 Cayenne.
That evening the Awards Banquet was held and our guest speaker was Hugh Heishman who was the first Porsche Dealer in Northern Virginia.
I then remembered that I had in my collection of T shirts, from when before time began, a Heishman Porsche Shirt that I took, with a Sharpie to have Hugh sign.
I was asked to sit at the table with Hugh and his wife which was also neat!

After the Concours Awards were presented they announced the 'Gay Jewett Peoples Choice Award' that the Roadster was given in 2010.
I could have fallen on the floor when they called my name as the recipent of the 2013 Peoples Choice Award for the Roadster. It is in the mail so I don't have a picture of it now. That makes up for winning the 356 class by default-of course the 944 Concours Award went the same way with only one car entered.
    Oh well!
Sunday morning we gathered at Southside Speedway for the autocross.
A couple of guys from the Region set these up around the state and do a great job. I think that 30-35 cars particated. Since I can only load 8 pics this is the shot that I took of the infield yesterday morning.
Ah heck maybe I'll do a PART II!

Part 2 of the Autocross participants.
I don't have the ,but some of the expected fast times would come from these cars.

Bobbie Brown's 914 (He has two well prepared 914s-not bad for a musician who had to play with his group last night in Virginia Beach then tow his car to Richmond!

I am sorry I missed the RPM, but on Saturday we drove 510 miles round trip to Southern Pines, NC to buy my daughter's new horse (a grandson of Storm Cat -- a famous thoroughbred stallion who commanded incredible stud fees).

Dragging a horse trailer behind the Dodge Ram was a long trip. Sunday we had to go out to the barn to get him all settled in and ride him. When I think about the $$ I have spent fueling Shannon's equestrian pursuits, I could have bought a few 911s or maybe a restored 356 Speedster! Here is Shannon on Oliver (race name was Pitt Maneuver). He is a big horse!

Hey Dick, Thank you for sharing your photos of this event, what beautiful country it is down your way! Only 2 356's; that is too bad! Maybe Pat can make it down for the next one if his daughter gives the okay. Magnificent horse BTW Pat. Thanks again Dick!

          Hey Folks,
Here are some pics that Englebert took from his green 'Airboxster' 911 last Sunday at Southside Speedway Autocross.
Also some stills that he shot of the other participants.
          Enjoy!
          Hope they come thru!
