A question car race number 68 did not race during the race number 68 was a Triumph
I haven't been able to work out the white Spyder to date. There are many changes to it like the indicator lights, windscreen and side mirrors and by the look of it, it has also been rear ended. Still going through my photo resource to find something similar
Vogel raced 550-0040 all the way through from May 1955 to Oct 1957. 0040 was one of the early spyders with the rubber strip which went back to the factory to get the air intakes cut in
Just found these great photos of 550-12 ready to go under the hammer at a Coy's Auction at Silverstone in 1994. What a bargain it would have gone for too!
Today it is in the Porsche Museum collection back in original livery
Vance, if I was 20 years older and wiser that car would be tucked away in my garage. My wife would have been pissed that I spent our first home deposit on a heap of an old race car, but by now I think she would have forgiven me! It still would be in original condition as I wouldn't have been allowed to waste another dime on it, but I would be happy!
New challenge! This is an article from a 1961 Panorama. Trying to work out which spyder it is but really struggling. If the number given is really P90011, it would be 550-0024, but there were mods done to the car when Trotter raced it and the rubber strip on the nose was removed. It was also owned and raced by him up to Sept 1961, so there wouldn't have been the previous owners as recorded. The only car I have for Frank Rand is 550-0062, which is too late a model to have the strip.
You guys are supposed to know everything Porsche, Vance! What I don't know, someone else should! It would be good if Vietta was still available to use her resources - I have sooooo many questions to be answered!
There has been some development. I have found this photo of Tom Countryman just after he bought the car (without an engine, but he put one in from his 356 Carrera). This must be after the other owners at Mankato Airport track
