Just to help out on the discussion on the Registry Forum re this car:

All the answers to which year, etc. and pre-A or not, etc. including which cars were designated as 1955s or 1954 etc. are in the book: Speedster Typ 540 and in a footnote in the follow-on book: Celebration of an Icon.

Read: this is a blatant plug for the two books.

Thanks Steve. This car is obviously not a '56 356A but who designated the "year". The factory or the dealership when the car sold new? If the factory did would its data plate next to the tank be stamped 1955 or 1956? Thanks for posting! Justin

      Gang,

Let meplease start over again as I have completely screwed this up in my haste:

      1) The car is a Pre-A, with a 1955 dataplate.
      2) It is one of 14 pre-A GS Speedsters.
      3) The dataplate says 1955 I believe despite its late 1955or early 1956 build. (I did get the part about the August vacations not always mattering).
      4) It has nothingto do with the first 200 stuff (in that regard I was thinking of an ealy non GS car).
5)The books note the plates as to the first 200 cars and there is a list as to the individual 4-cam Speedsters but I conflugated the two matters.
6)This 81072 is a fine car, in my view.
      7)Yes, dual transmission mounts.

Again, I am very sorry. Too much going on but no real excuse.
