  • 59 Convertible D easy restoration

    Hi Guys
Thought I would move over from the 'new guy' thread to the restoration thread and share the 'easy' restoration of a 59 Convertible D.
Sadly the car is no longer mine but at least I can share the journey and hopefully help others who are embarking on the restoration of a 'D'.
    A quick bit of background:
I had been driving a 59 RHD coupe around for several years but had always wanted a speedster, out of the blue a 'D' came up for sale in North Wales.
I didn't know that much about this Porsche type but it was as close as I could get to a speedster.
After driving for hours I finally got to see what was described as a fully restored 'D'.
This is what it looked like after bringing it home to Surrey.

The car had been sprayed inside with a tar like substance but the outside was very shinny, almost too shinny.
Rumour had it that the car had been imported from Canada and was is a very bad way before being restored by a well known UK restorer.

The previous owner had started to re-wire the car....

I was young, it was shinny and I had just enough room in my garage to work.

First up was the cabrio hood frame and posts.
Luckily the posts were brass and stamped with matching numbers to the chassis so off they went to get re chromed.
Next up was the cabrio frame this was 'restored' with rust breaking through everywhere and the pivots seized.

I was lucky that the car came with a new high quality fabric hood and new steel bumpers this was going to be 'easy'.

WOW! What a find this car was. The look on your face says it all; kid on Christmas morning. I'm sure you got it for a nice price to boot! I'm not that familiar with Roadsters; are the holes in the header frame factory or is that the previous owner trying to lighten it? Thanks for sharing these Drew! Looking forward to any others you have of this restoration.
