  • Speedster Name

    Guys,

I note that there is now a Registry discussion about the Speedster name.

See the Speedster Typ 540 book: Porsche considered "Silver Arrow"---the drawing is in the book.

    Thanks Steve!
Yeah, "silver Arrow"... not quite as catchy as "speedster". That name seems more befitting to a Rolls Royce model.

Anyone know about the "Bartlett" article/whatever referred to on the R Forum?

Can anyone tell me about this script? I read that the first 200 used it and then switched to the standard one we all recognize.

nope. See the Typ 540 book---probably fewer than six---80001 had no script. 80002-80004 did and 80010 did not.

Then there was the single Speedster D.

Yep. Now owned by Dr. Porsche.

Then, also, the second 'D' had speedster side script.

At the end of the line, it is interesting to me that the last 'D' was finished only about 10 days after the last Speedster.

Would that have been one of the special order pushrod GT Speedsters? Were they titled as '59 cars?

nope. Those---not really special ordered---the 4-cam motors were not available at the December '58--January '59 production time.

Last few chassis numbers finished June/July 1959.

                  I assume all '59s.

Steve, The fender Photo that Trevor posted I believe is Speedster #13; do I understand correctly that it should have the standard emblem script?
                    Thanks! Justin

                        Steve,

Possibly no conection but the first owner of my 356A in 1959 was J H Bartlett. He had a very well known high class car showroom in central London and sold many 356 cars. I believe he was also pre-war a racing driver. His company J H Bartlett was founded in 1922. He was the first person to register my car in the UK in May 59. Kept it only for 6 months never established if he bought it direct from the factory.

Not a really common surname. I wonder if he wrote the article?

                          Roy,

Beats me. I'm still trying to figure out.
