  • Ya gotta' love those "roll bars," or lack thereof.
Anyone know when SCCA first mandated roll bars - month, year, event?
My '52 AR was raced extensively from July 1952 through ??? yet never had a roll bar, or even seat belts (no holes, no weld marks). It does have an "SCCA Officially Registered Competition Car" plate, No. 642, on the instrument panel.

    • As near as I can tell by my photos, roll bars were mandatory in 1958. The rules were very vague and some bars were barely there, others made from electric conduit. The photo I hopefully attached is from the 1957 Watkins Glen GP and no rollbars on these Porsches.

      • I'll keep looking for pictures of my last Speedster, a '58, with it's original owner and a square corner roll bar and no bracing. Maybe those pictures are from '58.... but an old '59 GCR states that roll bars are mandatory for that year, but with vague specifications. I do not have nor can I find a '58 GCR for verification.

My first "racing" Speedster in '66 came with an arcing piece of water pipe behind the seats and no bracing. "Period" construction?

I worked the Grid at Watkins Glen for the 50th anniversary of racing there and came across a guy by the name of Denver Cornett tailing the "all MG" special class (of 70-some MGs). I asked about his dispensation for not having a roll bar and he was quick to regale me with the story of how he "just ducked under the cowling when he rolled (the same car ) at Millikens (spelling?) Corner on the old course at the first race." I laughingly asked that he demonstrate that again for me and he shot back..."Well, I can't....I didn't have to wear this blankety-blank seat belt back then either!"

Note the number changes, note the square 'roll bar' and note the hardtop on the Speedster and then the VW Beetle.

That's the original owner of 84255, Nagle Bridwell, and good friend Frank Robinson (brother of the late Norm Robinson, whose Convertible D got the bumpers from this Speedster after a crash with the D.)
