Seeing those old race Speedsters in such a state really makes one wonder just how many were actually scrapped?

Here's a great one from the period in which it suerly wouldn't have been saved.

Are those wheels VW bus wheels? 14"? At least they weren't painted that green!

Interesting thread. It reminds me of the most interesting part of my career...when I fixed hit/damaged 356s with parts from others.

I fixed a very good Speedster hit like the Speedster in the top photos and it ironically was also a (Chevy) blue. I knew of a racing wreck's good front half that was stripped and tucked away behind a local racer's garage. I bought that, derusted it and sectioned it into the hurt driver across the front fender arches and painted it it's original Meissen blue and I would hope even today, if it's still around, no one can tell it was repaired.....and yes, we kept the straightened front trunk part on with the chassis number of the repaired Speedster and threw the rest of the donor Speedster clip and it's number away.

There's another Speedster gone along with my old records that would reveal the chassis numbers of those two....which therefore cannot be "recycled."
