A quick Google search revealed that Al Zim sells a conversion kit where you provide your own alternator. Shasta Designs carries the look-alike alternator but it is 12 volts and you need to modify the generator stand due to the larger diameter.

I think that prolite who supply the 12v alternator via Prill were working working on a 6v version. Maybe this is what your read about?
