  • Oil pressure

    Hi out there
who can tell me the ideal oil pressure for my 1600 S engine ?
    In lbs or bar.
    Thank you !
    regards

    Hallo Jurgen,
Stock setting with pressure relief valve is 40 PSI, just under 3 BAR,
and should hot idle at 15 PSI, 1 BAR minimum. The newer springs for
pressure relief and bypass are the same and my experience has been higher
pressures overall, 30 PSI hot idle and 55 - 60 PSI under load.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Joel

As I recall, the advisable standard is 10lb./1K rpm.

          Hi Jurgen,

What I did not see told or asked is if your 1600 engine has the early "small" oil pump or the later (T-6>) "big" oil pump.

Early small oil pumps become a problem when they and all their attending parts get worn by age. I have had a machinist friend make 6mm spacers with his CNC so longer pump gears from VW could be added in a few early (T-2) engines that had the "idiot light" flicker at idle....that's usually about 3-5 psi. With a reconditioned cover plate/tach drive and the longer VW gears, hot idle would be 15psi and 60psi when cold, off idle, at operating rpm, 40 psi when warm (190-220 F).

Often ,the pump cover plate is overlooked during a rebuild and a simple bushing for the drive pin/follower pin is all that's needed, a simple machining job.
