During the October 1950 edition of the Paris carshow, Porsche management met Charles Faroux president of the very powerfull Atomobile Club de France and Auguste Veuillet a french businessman who was planning to obtain from Porsche the exclusive right to distribute their cars in to France
These 2 gentlemen suggested that Porsche enter the June 1951 edition of the famous Le Mans 24 Hours race in order to promote their cars
Porsche agreed to do so and started to thinck which car between the aluminium Gmund cars or the new Salzburg steel cars would be the best for that duty
It was decided that aluminium chassis + body lighter and stiffer than steel will be the best
From the 60 something Gmund cars produced around 6 complete chassis were left in a store at Gmund
It was decided that these six chassis will be used to produce the first Porsche race cars
A special hall rented to Reutter was converted into the Porsche race dept
