  • Shock Absorber interchangeability

My 356 is doing a weird creaky groaning thing on the front left hand suspension.
A recent MOT test showed nothing, the examiner and I spent a good ten minutes bouncing the car but we just couldn't locate it.
I fitted new king and link pins last year so surely it can't be that???
I'm thinking about starting easy, so new shock absorbers! They vary in price wildly! There are some on eBay in Germany listed as fitting Mercedes DB170. Is this the case? I thought the MB had the vertical bolt fitting the same as a '66 on VW????
Some say the pre '66 VW ones will fit but they look too short.
Anyone know if DB 170 is the same????

Why dont you take off the shock, and see if the noise goes away?

      Hi Jack.
I'd also considered swapping side to side....

...but you want to buy new parts first?

          Ok ok.
I just thought whilst I was in there I could swap the bits.
I think you are right. If I get a moment I'll remove the one I believe to be the culprit and go for a short, slow drive over some of the "sleeping policemen" that inhabit the roads around here.

I would, however, still be interested to learn if the DB170 items are indeed the same.
