  • Blue 62 Gas tank replacement

Had an occasional gas smell in the garage. Did an inspection, fuel cock was damp around the inlet. OK rebuilt, new fuel line, vent hose, it seems good, but I did noticed some tar stains under the shelf. Then a few days later we filed the tank, and the smell returned. But this time the tar was wet. Ordered a new tank from Stoddard, a C top sender, new seals etc.

Took out the old tank, bottom surface was wet. Had a pin hole in the bottom, intermittent leak only when the fuel was higher, it also had a gas smell on hard left turns. We always thought that was the cap. Turns out the vent tray had need leaking for years are the bottom of the tank, and the rubber seal on the neck had rusted out also. Inside is bright and clean, outside was disgusting.

So anyway, T-6 bottom sender to top sender conversion was the best option. Spliced in a couple feet of new wire from the original harness. Drilled a hole in the steering box cover for the new wires. And put in the tank. Works well. Removed the original jute sound deadening, replaced it with Optpmat tar sheet, conformal fit via heat gun and sealed up the area. Put two coats of Raptor truck bead liner on the bottom of the tank. The installed the new tank. Worked fine,.
