  • Motor numbers

There is a thread on the Registry site where a fellow asked if the factory could have numbered two motors the same.

The thread has morphed a bit into discussing the other numbers on the other case half.

It correct, that just like with the 4-cam motors, the pushrod motors also had what Porsche called an "int. nr.". It wasnot internal; it was on the outside. Anyway, most likely all ofus have seen these numbers from time to time.

The important part for the 4-cams----and this will become true for the pushrods---is that a regular motor number can, of course, be faked. That is, let's say an original motor was gone but someone knows what it should have been for a particular car. A blank case or otherwise couldbe used and the motor number stamped in.

BUT-----how would you know the other number? Well, for the 4-cams, we have figured them out and they are not sequential (or said another way, there is no magic code to go from the motor number to the "int nr."). We also have/related the pushrod motors for about 1/3 of them.

If you have a 4-cam or pushrod motor and are worried
as to its authenticity, contact me off line.
